Dear Friends,
The City of Chandigarh
was built as the new capital of post-partition Punjab in lieu of the erstwhile
capital city of Lahore. With architectural contributions by Le Corbusier, Pierre
Jeanerette, Mathew Nowicki, and Albert Mayer, the city of Chandigarh is the
dream city of our first prime minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, who once
remarked in 1952 about Chandigarh, “Let this be a new town symbolic of the
freedom of India unfettered by the traditions of the past, and an expression of
the nation’s faith in the future”. Named after Goddess Chandi, Chandigarh is
occasionally referred to as ‘ The City Beautiful’. Our city of Chandigarh is at
present a Union Territory, and it has the privilege of being the capital of two
Indian States i.e. Punjab and Haryana.
Over the years, the city of
Chandigarh has seen all-round development. However, there are many challenges
that all of us need to deliberate upon. Some such concerns that require our
immediate attention are the emergence of illegal habitations, encroachments,
parking space for ever increasing number of vehicles including those coming from
satellite towns of Panchkula and Mohali,
sanitation and maintenance of cleanliness, maintenance of parks etc.
The
Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh endeavours to not only maintain the high
civic standards of the city, but to also now work for the development of
Chandigarh into a world-class city with cities like Washington D.C. and Canberra
serving as benchmarks and models for our future growth and development
I
am confident that each of you would contribute to enable your city to attain new
heights of progress and development.
